I chose to look at a exhibit catalog on Fashion and the reflection of superheroes within the discipline. The book shows the different types of adaptations based on comic superhero uniforms fashion has used to recreate the values and models which are inherently attached to a superhero, by exposing pictures of the different types of clothes.
The photography presents two mathematical ideas, symmetry and transformation. By presenting the original comic model of the superhero and the tv/movie adaptations alongside images from the catwalk, the focus stays on the similarity between the original symbol and its refection in Fashion. For example looking at the superman S, it was shifted and swichted into print and other designs which still are close enough in terms of colors to recall the original seal. The symmetry is brought out by fashion in general because of the paterns. Here more specifically when looking at any "patriotic" uniform, most recent of which could be seen as the official US uniform for the Games, have a symetry in the pattern placement. As such the book shows how the use of graphical and geometrical patterns are applied other then in graphs or curves.
I think that using alternative ways to explain the purpose and the use of mathematical concepts is a good way of making some notions more accessible for everyone to see applied in the real world. Relating concepts to current uses of theory and application in otherwise unrelated concepts helps also to demystify some of the more complex theories which we may be using without thinking in our everyday life.
very interesting choice, helene. nice way of looking at symmetry. =0]
