What's your function Blog 2

Part A

1. Washington Post
2. The vertical line test (finish)

3.This function shows the internet users as percentage of a population in ten countries every year since 1990 to 2008
4.This function is not linear
5.This function is not linear because if we were to create an equation for the following graphs the output (the y variable) would not equal its specific input (the x variable). Additionally it does not make a straight line.
6.This function is not a mathematical model because the outputs don’t depend on the inputs

Part B

1. The relationships that are not functions don’t pass the vertical line test, have multiple outputs for one input and not each output has an input.
 2. From the Washington Post                              3.This graph shows the life expectancy in relation to a person’s income (in US dollars) per country.  The size of the circles depends on the population size.
4.This relationship is not a function because it firstly doesn’t pass the vertical line test and secondly there are several input for each outputs and thirdly. Overall there are countries that have similar inputs, which prevents this graph to be a function.

  2. lana,

nice job on your first example. very well explained!

in your second example, what you actually see on these graphs are several separate relationships that constitute functions. every line is a new function, so this doesn't meet the criteria for the second part of the assignment. the information in the articles, however, is very interesting.

    professor little

  3. your first example was explained very thoroughly and made sense when i looked at the graph from your chosen article
